What to Wear for Your Family Photo Shoot:
Style Tips for a Cohesive, Timeless Look
Coordinating outfits for a large family session might seem overwhelming, but it can be fun and straightforward with some guidance! Whether you bring grandparents, cousins, siblings, or extended relatives, these tips will help you create a polished, cohesive look that photographs beautifully and stands the test of time.
1. Start with a Color Palette, Not Matching Outfits
Avoid the “everyone in white shirts and jeans” look. Instead, choose 2–3 base colors and 1–2 accent tones to build your wardrobe. Think soft neutrals (like ivory, taupe, or sage) with accents in warm tones (like rust, mustard, or blush). This creates visual harmony while letting everyone show their style.
2. Textures and Layers Add Depth
Incorporate fabrics like linen, cotton, denim, lace, or knitwear. Layers—like cardigans, vests, or shawls—can add interest and movement to your images without overwhelming the frame.
3. Keep Patterns Minimal and Purposeful
A few subtle patterns (like florals, stripes, or plaids) can add personality, but too many can be distracting. Choose 1–2 people in patterned pieces and keep the rest in solids, coordinating with those tones.
4. Coordinate by Family Units
For extended families, have each minor family group work within a mini color palette that fits into the larger scheme. This helps everyone feel cohesive as a group, while still showing who's connected.
5. Footwear Matters Too
Shoes often get overlooked, but they show in many of your photos, especially with little ones. Stick with neutral, clean footwear. Avoid athletic shoes, neon colors, or anything with large logos.
6. Use the Client Closet
Don’t forget: I offer access to a beautifully curated client closet with timeless pieces for moms and littles. These session-ready outfits are perfect for creating a luxury look without the stress of shopping.
7. Dress for the Location and Season
Shooting in the Arizona desert or a lush green park? Your clothing should complement the scenery. Lighter, breathable fabrics work best in the warmer months, while richer tones and layers look stunning in fall and winter.
8. Comfort and Confidence Are Key
Make sure everyone feels good in what they’re wearing. Confidence shows on camera. Avoid anything too tight, itchy, or fussy—especially for kids.
